The U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais shows the Court’s flawed interpretation of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments.
The 13th, 14th, and 15th Reconstruction Amendments were created to remedy race discrimination. They are race conscious. They do not ignore race, as the Court now says should be done.
While we have seen progress, we still have race discrimination in this country, including in voting. The Voting Rights Act (VRA), while imperfect, was one of the most effective pieces of legislation for addressing race discrimination in the history of this country. And yet because of the protections it provided, it has been dismantled by the Court’s ruling.
