Redistricting Part 2: The Redistricting Arms Race Explained

In my last post, I explained the concept of redistricting. Now, let’s talk about the redistricting “arms race” that we have found ourselves in over the past year.

In short, it’s a mess! The mess began when the President called on the Governor of Texas to draw five additional Republican districts in Texas in advance of the Congressional midterm elections. California then responded, essentially saying that if Texas can create five districts, it can do the same thing.

Since then, we’ve seen Missouri draw additional districts, and other states contemplate doing the same. Courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, are reviewing challenges to these redistricting plans.

While we don’t know how all of this will play out, I maintain that this still comes down to people power and voter turnout. I’ll explain more about what I mean by that in my next post – stay tuned!
