In 2025, more than 300,000 Black women lost their jobs. The New York Times recently examined the “sharp and unique decline in employment for Black women.” The article also discusses the ways that Black women have come together to support one another.
This is a systemic issue. At its core, this is about power. Ultimately, we will need to rebuild systems and do the work of creating the world we want to live in.
In the meantime, we can do what is in our power to support those who have been impacted by these job losses. If you have the power to employ people, even if just for a short period of time, do that. If you are able to cook a meal, do that. This is an opportunity to assess what we have, what we need, and what we can do to help.
