As we begin 2026, there are several voting rights issues that I am keeping my eye on.
However, top of mind is the highly anticipated ruling in Louisiana v. Callais. In this case, the Supreme Court case will address the extent to which race can be used in the redistricting process. Underlying this case is an effort to eliminate the recognition of race on all levels, including in voting, and to dismantle the Voting Rights Act.
Regardless of the Court’s ruling, I will be looking to see whether Congress will step up to protect voting rights. I will also be watching how people and organizations respond to the Court’s ruling in Callais. There are things we all can do to agitate and participate in support of voting rights.
